The Palm leaf products are being produced with sustainable resource (made from fallen leaves, 100% natural) through eco-friendly
process (no chemicals or additives used) and make sure it is acceptable to Earth when disposed (biodegradable and compostable)
From reusing milk cartons combined with pressed leaves, the research team of the Institute of Science, Technology and Environmental Management, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City has created many beautiful and friendly dishes.
Dried eagle leaves for dishes
In Vietnam, the eagle tree is easy to grow, grows well and is present in most localities across the country. People have long used the leaves to treat fever, rheumatism and dysentery, treat heavy metals in water, and effectively prevent bacteria and fungi on fish.
Although the leaves have many useful uses, there are still no related studies that have been widely applied. A type of waste with a very large amount is milk cartons, which currently have no reuse technology, which is very wasteful.
Faced with that fact, a young research group from the Institute of Science, Technology and Environmental Management under the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City has researched the reuse of milk cartons combined with leaves of the eagle tree, in order to create disc products, contributing environmental pollution reduction.
The manufacturing process is quite simple. The leaves and milk cartons are collected and washed with clean water to remove dirt and impurities. After that, the two materials continued to be soaked in 3% Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution to disinfect, washed again with clean water and dried.
The leaves are placed on the outside of the milk carton and the press is heated at different temperatures and times to create the finished product. After conducting the experiment, the team found the optimal temperature for disc production at 140ºC, for 3 minutes and did not use glue for the heating pressing process.
Leaf plate products are tested by the group for microbiological and heavy metal criteria at the Center for Science and Biotechnology of the University of Natural Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City. The results showed that, no bacteria causing digestive diseases such as Coliform,
Escherichia coli, Salmonella and heavy metals such as Antimony (Sb), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb). The product has a good shape with the ability to keep color, withstand mold, after storage time for more than one month.
Palm Leaf Plate
The group’s initial research results show that the leaf plate is safe and suitable for use in life, the food industry can replace disposable plastic plates.
The research results are also the basis for other studies, related to the reuse of milk cartons in combination with other leaves. The team continues to research, test and evaluate the shelf life of the product.
Dried banana leaves make dishes
Only from banana peels and banana leaves, a group of young people from Ho Chi Minh City have dried them, forming disposable boxes, cups and plates to replace plastic boxes. The product is completely natural and biodegrades after 45 days. Overcoming 7 other projects in the final round of the “Innovative Agricultural Start-up 2020” contest, the project “VIBALE – improving the value of bananas (agricultural by-products) after harvest” has won the award. first prize.
It is known that the project has been implemented since 2019 with the goal of using banana leaves as trays, boxes and plates to replace the very popular foam food container product but is one of the culprits causing environmental pollution. .
Sharing about the idea of making boxes, trays and plates from banana leaves, Nguyen Dieu Linh, a member of VIBALE group, shared: “When I was passing by landfills, I noticed the number of plastic bags and foam boxes that people waste. out a lot. While these wastes take hundreds, thousands of years to decompose. Not to mention the risk of diseases like cancer.
Therefore, the group thought of finding alternative materials to protect the environment.” Meanwhile, banana trees and banana leaves are very easy to find, are agricultural by-products after being harvested, the main thing. so the team was determined to do research.
According to Dieu Linh, the group chose banana leaves because they are large enough to meet the product size; healthy for consumers’ health. Vietnam has many banana growing areas, farmers after harvesting the fruit can sell the leaves and increase their livelihoods.
According to statistics of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, households across the country, discharge about 25 million bags/day, this number is constantly increasing, seriously affecting the environment. Up to now, Vietnam is the fourth country to generate plastic waste after China, Indonesia and the Philippines in Asia. Therefore, the use of natural leaves to wrap food is a practical measure that should be promoted in the long run to protect the environment.
If a plastic bag takes 10 to 20 years, maybe even hundreds of years to decompose in the natural environment, causing heavy pollution. The leaves only take from 4 weeks to 2 months to decompose and turn into useful organic matter for plants. Therefore, the above practical ideas should be encouraged to be replicated, contributing to environmental protection and health.
