    Description

    gum rosin– Gum rosin, also called colophony or Greek pitch (Latin: pix græca). It is semi-transparent and varies in color from yellow to black. At room temperature rosin is brittle, but it melts at stove-top temperature. It chiefly consists of various resin acids, especially abietic acid. The term “colophony” comes from colophonia resina, Latin for “resin from Colophon,” an ancient Ionic city.

    – It becomes sticky when warm and has a faint pinelike odour. The stumps, is usually of a darker colour.
    Applications of gum rosin:
    1. Rubber Industry:
    It is used as a softening agent in rubber industry.
    It improves elasticity, cohesion and endurance to heat.


    2. Adhesive Industry:
    It iss uses for strengthening, softening and better adhesion.


    3. Paper Industry:
    It is used as sizing agent in the paper industry. It gives abrasion resistance, strength, smoothness and bette pringting.


    4. Paint Industry:
    It is used as a basic ingredient in the paint industry. It is used in road paint and thermoplastic paints.


    5. Other applications:
    It is used in printing ink as color carrier, as welding flux and for polishing in metal processing, as an additive in soap, food, antiseptics and germicides.
