     Brewer’s Grains – Nutritional Secret for Healthy Livestock

    What is Brewer’s Grain?

    The remaining grain after fermentation and distillation of beer in Vietnam is called Brewer’s Grain. Brewer’s Grain is a protein concentrate remaining after the beer production process. It is provided to farmers in the form of silage and dried in powder form, or pressed into granular pellets. The fresh product is a liquid that can be stored for no more than 4 days. Moreover, the oxidation process begins in which useful substances are replaced by toxic ones. Therefore, for use in livestock, Brewer’s Grain must be dried or silaged.

    Brewer's Grain

    Why is Brewer’s Grains said to be a valuable protein-rich food for livestock?

    100g of brewer’s grain contains:

    • 0.8g of ash;
    • 11g of organic matter without nitrogen;
    • 0.1g of phosphorus;
    • 0.07g of calcium;
    • 78g of water;
    • 4g of protein;
    • 2g of fat;
    • 0.3g of sugar;
    • 3.5g of fiber.

    The nutritional value of 1kg of silage corresponds to a similar portion of mixed feed for dairy cows with a protein content of 25% and an energy output for milk secretion of 6.7 MJ. Regularly adding brewer’s grain pellets as feed to the ration at a rate of 10-12kg per cow per day helps save 2.5kg of concentrated feed per day.

    Brewer’s grain is rich in protein and fiber, which has a positive effect on the stomach of cattle. With regular inclusion in the diet, it will normalize the rumen, preventing diarrhea in cows. The high protein content of beer remains stable in the stomach. Nearly 50% of the protein passes through the rumen undigested; assimilation occurs in the small intestine.

    Advantages and disadvantages of Brewer’s Grain  as food

    Advantages

    • It is a supplementary food, supplementing nutrients for livestock and poultry in addition to the main foods.
    • Reduces the cost of feed for livestock and poultry.
    • Beer dregs contain fermented products, which stimulate appetite. When livestock eat beer dregs properly, it will stimulate appetite and increase milk production.
    • Strengthens the digestive system of livestock and poultry, thereby helping livestock and poultry reduce intestinal diseases.

    Brewer's Grain

    Disadvantages

    • Fresh beer dregs must be used within 24 hours, otherwise, the beer dregs will quickly ferment and turn sour, losing all nutrients. If livestock and poultry are deliberately fed with it, they may have diarrhea, causing economic losses.
    • With dry beer lees, it can be stored longer than fresh beer lees, but the nutritional content after being pressed dry will not be equal to fresh beer lees, so dry beer lees will not be as good as fresh beer lees.

    In the beer production process, not only beer lees need to be treated but also waste solutions that need to be discarded. The treatment of these wastes requires the use of specialized pumps such as screw pumps, pneumatic diaphragm pumps, etc. To know which type of pump is used to pump beer lees, which pump is used to pump waste solutions after the beer processing process, please contact us for more details.

    Rules for preservation and storage

    Fresh beer waste contains 20-25% dry matter and has a temperature of 55-65 °C. With such indicators, the beer grains must be fermented within 3 days. Fermenting beer grains is more difficult than corn because it contains less moisture and sugar. The use of biological preservatives is useless, because lactic acid bacteria do not actively multiply at temperatures up to 65 °C. The only acceptable and uncomplicated method of silage is to put them in plastic sleeves (sealed plastic bags). If it is not possible to use sealed plastic bags, you can spread the beer grains on a concrete surface, cover them with a film below and above to create anaerobic conditions, fix the structure with sandbags or other weights.

    The silage pile must not be in contact with the ground. Ash particles contained in the ground disrupt the fermentation process.

    The pile should not be higher than 1.5 m, silage lasts 3 days. After this time, the farmer can lower the pressure on the pile or bag. But feeding silage from a tube or bag should not last longer than 3 days.

    It is best to leave the silo sealed for a month. During this time, the core of the pile will gradually cool to the outside temperature, and mold growth will slow down. Therefore, the product will be usable for livestock for a longer time. Sealed silo tubes can be stored for at least six months.
