When loofah gourds are young, they are commonly used as a vegetable in meals. However, when the gourds are left to mature fully on the vine, the flesh dries out, leaving only the fibrous, mesh-like structure inside. This is the loofah fiber used in many fields.

I. Characteristics of loofah
Loofah sponges possess outstanding natural characteristics:
Color: ivory white, light yellow, or natural yellow

Texture: mesh-like, porous, lightweight, and elastic
Weight: very light, easy to transport
Water absorption capacity: high, retains moisture well
Durability: strong fibers, resistant to rapid decay
Breathability: good due to its porous structure
Environmentally friendly: 100% natural and biodegradable
This cross-woven fiber structure allows loofah sponges to clean surfaces without causing severe scratching.
II.Loofah fiber production process
Step 1: Harvesting mature loofah gourds
When the loofah gourds turn brown or dry yellow and the outer skin becomes hard, farmers harvest them. At this stage, the inner fiber structure has fully formed, creating a strong and durable natural network that is suitable for producing loofah fiber products.

Step 2: Soaking, peeling, and removing the seeds
After harvesting, the gourds are usually soaked in water for a period of time to soften the dry outer skin. This process makes it easier to peel off the skin. Once the skin is removed, the dry seeds inside are shaken or lightly tapped out, leaving the hollow fibrous structure. The seeds can also be collected and used for planting in the next growing season.
Step 3: Washing and drying the loofah fiber
The loofah fiber is washed several times with clean water to remove dirt, plant residue, and other impurities. After washing, the fibers are sun-dried or machine-dried to reduce moisture content. This step helps maintain durability and prevents mold during storage.

Step 4: Cutting, shaping, and packaging
Once the loofah fibers are completely dry, they are cut or shaped into different sizes and forms depending on their intended use, such as bath sponges, dish scrubbers, or exfoliating pads. Finally, the products are inspected for quality, sterilized if necessary, and then packaged and stored for distribution in domestic markets or for export.
